The Common Core Standards
Recently, New York has adopted a new set of learning standards called the Common Core Standards. In these new standards, the curriculum has become more rigorous and student expectations have been increased. As a certified English and Reading Teacher, the English Language Arts Standards and the Literacy Standards in the content areas are vital to my success as a teacher. As a result, I've become familiar with the standards that are relevant to English and Literacy.
I've included three lessons I've created using the Common Core Reading and Writing Standards. These lessons were created during my practicum at Pathogue-Medford High School. The first lesson uses the Twitter Microfiction Activity, and develops the students' ability to write in different forms, as well as editing their own writing. The second lesson focuses on developing the students' ability to detect different biases in writing and write objectively. The third lesson focuses on word study in relation to word families and affixes.

While comprehending literature is an important part of Literacy Education, it is not the only skill relevant to a student's success. The purpose of the Informational Text Standards is to develop the skills necessary to be able to read non-fictional texts to gain information, insight, and perform high levels of analysis. As such, it's important to recognize and develop a student's ability to analyze various media.
