What is EXPLORE Writing?
EXPLORE Writing is a writing strategy that helps students assess the text they just read and analyze key aspects of the text. This is an after reading strategy that develops the student's ability to evaluate a text and their thoughts and reactions in writing.
What does EXPLORE mean?
EXample - This is an example of the genre/author/style.
Purpose - What is the author's purpose in writing this text?
Lines - What are key lines worth remembering?
Organization - What organizational features or supports helped me read this book or got in the way of my understanding?
Relate - How can I relate to what I just read?
Evaluate - Evaluate by thinking about my ah-ha's, questions, and connections.
Why use EXPLORE Writing?
This strategy would be beneficial for students who struggle with reading comprehension, deciphering the author's purpose, and the complex process of writing. This instructional method would surely benefit students in an English Language Arts Language Arts, however, integrating this tool into other content areas will certainly get students thinking critically, and encourage them to expand upon their learning. This tool serves as a springboard for student writing, especially in regard to many students struggling to being the writing process. When I worked with a night school student for my practicum, he noted the difficulty he had starting to write, but once he began writing he was able to delve into the topic. To address this issue, I brought in prompts for him, but EXPLORE Writing would have been a great tool to use with this student, because it provides clear prompts to guide his writing.
