Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Google Sketch Up
Google Sketch Up is a great tool for students to create and design structures of their own. Additionally, this program is a useful way for students to visually represent their comprehension of concrete and abstract aspects of a text. I created one sketch for the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, which follows a family in Mississippi during the Great Depression. The following is an example of a sketch and rationale that students can produce.
For my Google Sketch Up drawing, I chose to represent a hypothetical space for one of the characters. Because he’s always worried about cleanliness and the upkeep of his belongings, I decided to draw Little Man’s ideal room. From our first interaction with him, we know that he likes to be very clean and has a passion for books. Using this knowledge, I tried to create a room that would suit these needs, and extrapolated from this information some other materials he could ostensibly want in his perfect room.
More than anything, it would seem that while they enjoy spending time with their brothers and sister, each of the Logan children would like their own room. With this in mind, I created a room of his very own for Little Man. I didn’t want to make an excessively large room, because Little Man appears to be the type of character that tempers his desires, especially when he realizes he doesn’t need a large space to feel comfortable in his room. There were two main elements I wanted to include in the room: a nice bookcase and an armoire. The bookcase was an obvious choice because of his expressed love of books. His dream room would be littered with books, but in an organized fashion. The armoire was an addition that wasn’t explicitly addressed, but Little Man would want a place to keep his clothes where they can always stay clean. The rug is his room would be an especially comfortable place for him to lie down and read his books. The coat rack would be used to hold his coat and a jacket like Stacey’s.
There were other utilitarian elements I added to the room. I put several windows by his bed so that he could watch the sun rise and set each day. Additionally, I put a table next to his bed to hold his books while he sleeps. I added a lamp so that he wouldn’t have to read by fire light. Overall, I thought this room reflected known aspects of his character, while also drawing inferences to select additional items to reflect his character currently and in the future.
