Journey to Freedom
This biography follows the life of Harriet Tubman, from her roots as a child born into slavery to her well known exploits as a member of the Underground Railroad. While Tubman's story is known in broad strokes, Troy notes interesting, little known facts about her life. Particularly, Troy discusses Tubman's birth name and how she grew to become Harriet Ross. In addition to following Tubman as she helped over 300 slaves escape the South through the Underground Railroad, Troy explores events happening concurrently to Tubman's exploits, painting a narrative of the time in addition to Tubman's life. Some of the events that played an integral part in the narrative are the Dred Scott Case, the Fugitive Slave Act, the Civil War, and President Lincoln's assassination. Additionally, Troy discusses Tubman's life after the Underground Railroad, a topic normally ignored. Troy does an admirable job creating a narrative of Tubman's life within the context of the world she lived in.
